Whenever we hear the word athletes, the focus is mainly placed on physical powers and achieving peak performance. Some athletes silently struggle with anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. Athletes have always been revered for their strength. The societal expectations and pressure makes it difficult for athletes to be open about their struggles with mental health. It’s crucial to understand that mental health challenges can impact any individual , regardless of their physical abilities or achievements. Once talking with my friend who is an athlete, I asked what happens to you whenever you lose a game? The reply was that there is the pressure to win the game but when we lose I neither cry nor I smile, I just do not speak anything. We face difficulties when it comes to expressing your emotions. No one knows what is going through our minds while playing a game, while running, practicing or even while losing a game. The reply was that we don’t actually like to tell people what we are going through mentally just because of the pressure. Athletes look so confident and strong that you never think that they go through the exact same emotions as you. This is sometimes heartbreaking. But in recent years, a growing number of athletes have bravely shared their own experiences with mental health and breaking the silence. Whenever we see an athlete they are always very positive, dedicated and always motivating other athletes and motivating others to seek help. The word of athletics is slowly but surely recognising the importance of prioritizing athletes' mental health. Let us continue to challenge societal expectations, break down stigmas and shape a new narrative in which athletes mental health is valued as much as their physical abilities. We are proud of each and every athlete working hard with great enthusiasm and dedication.
